Fireplace Hearth Designs

The hearth is the pedestal where the whole of the fireplace is set on. Although it is not used on every fireplace it is great to have because it provides people with a small space in which they can get close to the fire but still have a small barrier between the kindling flames and any carpet near by.

It is important to choose the right type of fireplace hearth design for your home because it is the key to bringing the surround and mantelpiece together. Though they are all connected to the hearth they do not always require the need to use the same materials when building it.

It is best to use materials like, marble, concrete, and tiles – which are fire resistant. It must also be able to handle granite slabs in order to produce the most amount of heat in your home. When making the choice of what materials to use you have to consider what they will look like in your home.

Tile

Tile is very unusual to use as a hearth – but it provides you with versatility in the design you can have. This material can be found in an array of colors that will allow you to create a unique pattern. Either use one solid color or combine two or three together. Just make sure that the colors match those you already use in the room or it will stick out in a bad way.

Marble

Marble is going to be the most expensive to work with and probably the most difficult. It is not as versatile – but it does help to create a more elegant fireplace hearth design. This comes in various colors and textures in which no two are alike.

Concrete

Not many of you would not think to use concrete because it sounds so generic and boring. What you don’t know is that concrete can be stained with the color of your choice. While it might not allow much room for a pattern it will still help to bring the design you want for your home.

Fireplace Hearth Rugs

The materials and style are not the only tools you can use when designing the hearth. One necessity you should consider purchasing is a fireplace hearth rug. This is a small throw rug that is placed in front of the hearth. It is made with flame retardant material and works for two reasons. The first is to provide your fireplace with more color. The second is to protect the carpet or hardwood flooring.

In a wood burning fireplace you will always run the risk of sparks flying between the grating. Even if you have a long heart this is still possible. The best way to protect the area around the fireplace from catching on fire is to place the hearth rug in front of it. These cost between $20 to $80.
